The fallout from Double or Nothing is heavy as Dynamite delivers quite a few surprises tonight.
CM Punk & FTR defeat Max Caster & The Ass Boys (aka The Gunn Club)
Nice little opener to get the live crowd hot. Great way to fire up the night, Gunn sons and their comedy act earning easy heel heat as FTR and Punk rally and earn the win.
Punk just doesn’t seem to have luck springboarding off the ropes.
The next story unfolds very quickly, as Punk and FTR talk up the special PPV coming up in a month, Forbidden Door. Punk wants to know who his opponent is going to be, and we get an answer…
Hiroshi Tanahashi!
Business is picking up as we roll right into the next segment… MJF
If you expected a pipe bomb, you got it. If you expected a fourth wall-breaking promo, or the blurring lines between script and reality, unable to tell how much is “a work” and “real” – This was the promo. In brief, MJF ranted about working his tuchas off, yet is being paid less than the ex-WWE guys being hired. MJF implies maybe being an ex-WWE guy is what will get him the money he deserves.
He then tears into fans who are cheering, yet have no problem trashing him on social media. Calling out so-called fans and marks alike, pointing out the hypocrisy of their idiocy on twitter, and unable to keep an opinion straight for more than five minutes… Was that MJF talking or me?
Caps off the promo openly calling Tony Khan a giant mark who should be in the crowd and not running a company. He then begs to be fired. Begs.
This is but a snippet of the segment. Shots most certainly fired.
Miro returns and defeats Johnny Elite
I’ll stop short of calling it a squash, but Johnny Elite’s open challenge turned into an open disaster. This was all Miro, and the live crowd was HOT for his return. Sure, he comes out of the heel tunnel, but the crowd ovation was deafening.
Jericho Appreciation Society Segment
As the victors from last night gloat, Eddie Kingston and William Regal storm the entranceway and I love every second of Eddie stomping around like a dude about to bust a gasket. Regal with the sneering demeanor. Kingston wants one more shot at Jericho, and has Regal deliver the bad news… Blood and Guts.
Jericho initially declines and sends his group to overwhelm Kingston, but Jericho is attacked from behind by Ortiz, who pulls out scissors and chops some locks of The Wizard’s hair. This leads Jericho to challenge Ortiz to a hair v. hair match.
I never thought I would see the day where Eddie Kingston and William Regal would be standing together.
The Young Bucks, ReDragon, and Hikuleo defeated Matt Hardy, Darby Allin, Christian, Jungle Boy, and Luchasaurus
This was a fun, fast paced match. A little disappointing to see Jungle Boy get pinned, and returning to what may be yet another losing streak. I feel the champs were devalued just for the sake of creating a triple threat tag match at the PPV. Tag champs on a losing streak only to emerge victorious at a PPV, but then lose again! It doesn’t make the champs credible.
Now we’ve got Bucks, ReDragon, Swerve & Glory, FTR, and who knows what other tag teams are lining up for their shot.
Also, very quick shot of Christian pulling Jungle Boy away from Matt Hardy. Thus begins the tease for the long awaited-yet-predicted heel turn.
Tony Schiavone attempts to interview Athena, but is interrupted by TBS Champion Jade Cargill and The Baddies with Stoke Hathaway. Thankfully, Stoke takes the reins of the promo, telling Athena she has to get in line if she wants a match with the champ. Athena is joined by Anna Jay and Kris Statlander, shouting at each other as referees prevent a fight.
Didn’t feel this segment. Sorry.
Ruby Soho & Toni Storm defeat Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. and Jamie Hayter
Now this was a fantastic match. Soho getting the win felt like some redemption, however the heels leave triumphant after a post-match attack. Storm folded Hayter with a sick german suplex mid-match.
Main Event of AEW Dynamite 6/1: Jon Moxley defeated Daniel Garcia
This could have taken place in the ECW Arena. Wrestling with brawls and buckets of blood. Garcia may very well be the next Dean Malenko. There were moments where I believed Garcia could win, and could win clean. Jericho tried to intervene, but Eddie Kingston ran out and stopped him. The build to a Blood and Guts match starts tonight as Mox joins Eddie.
Next week on Dynamite, the road to Forbidden Door continues as “Hangman” Adam Page takes on David Finlay from NJPW.
As Good Ol’ J.R. says… Business, is about to pick up.
