Preview Special: Space Ghost #3 (Dynamite Comics)

Action! Battle! Suspense! Time appears to have passed since the conclusion of issue #2, our heroic vigilantes continue their independent quest against the nefarious Robo Corp, fighting against hordes of pirates, criminals, and ne’er-do-wells who continue their own rampage of villainy across the galaxy!

The first panels of the issue have a collage of conflicts, and keen-eyed-readers may recognize some of the baddies within. Very cool. These don’t feel random either, it’s as though certain scenes are meant to call back to some original story, or perhaps a glimpse into future quests?

The issue progresses as the trio face off with more adversaries they can count, until someone with a sinister scheme appears to save the day. However, even saviors have a price. This new player should be familiar to longtime fans of the original Space Ghost cartoon and even Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. I will not spoil who the character is, but a key element of this character is the potential introduction for this universe’s own Council of Doom. Ironically, the villains this individual saves Space Ghost and company from originally were once allies.

In another universe perhaps.

The issue weaves a story where their journey for justice is compared to vengeance. The new character preys on Jan, and her unwavering mission to avenge the death of her father. This creates a tangled web of emotions for her, as loyalty is tested while the harsh reality of their plight is highlighted enough to cast doubt on whether the mission is a realistic goal.

If Space Ghost is Batman, you’ve got your Robin in Jan. Crafty, observant of the environment, uses out-of-the-box strategy, but also realizes an unchecked impulse to fight may lead to a bitter conclusion. The issue overall stands out as the newest introduction to the series spins situations to an advantage, while also establishing various threads of what appears to be encounters soon to come. This certainly has the feel of something more than just villain of the week. A big encounter is coming, and the final page of the issue teases a major character appearance for issue #4!
