“PFN is an entire vibe.”

These words from P-Funk North singer/songwriter/bassist David Sloyan are just a mere “as the kids would” statement to seem hip and cool. Today, more than ever, bands like P-Funk North are creating a vibe, a movement, a community through their music and social media presence. It’s the essence of the grassroots efforts that has rocketed bands like P-Funk from the small stages to festivals, after parties, and country star’s former tour buses (more on that later).

Recently, we caught up with P-Funk North to discuss their new single “Something in the Water,” their music video for the song, new music on the horizon and more.

P Funk North is (Band Members & Instruments They Play):
David Sloyan – Singer/songwriter/bassist
Kevin Nenichka – Guitar/backing vox
Jack LaMonica – Drums
Kingsley Joshua – Hypeman/dancer

Year We Were Founded: Founded in 2013 by singer/songwriter/bassist David Sloyan in North Plainfield, NJ.

The Story Behind Our Name: P-Funk North means North Plainfield referencing our home town in New Jersey.

Bands You Might Have Seen Us Before In: Dave formerly played bass in NJ rock/reggae trio Milan and the Sour Goat and Kevin and Jack formerly played together in NJ rock band Experiment 34.

Famous/Cool Bands We’ve Shared the Stage With: PFN has shared the stage with The Wailers, The Offspring, Slightly Stoopid, Shwayze, Afroman and many more with festival appearances alongside Sublime, 311, Cage the Elephant, Blink-182 and many more.

Our Sound Has Been Likened To: Alternative rock reggae fusion combining Sublime, Green Day and Nirvana with a touch of Alice In Chains.

You dropped a new single “Something in the Water” in mid-August. Can you talk about how this song stands out from the rest of your catalog?

Unlike some previous releases that are more light hearted and reggae/ska heavy, “SITW” leans into the gritty grunge and pop punk vibe documenting an existential crisis in real time.

Is it safe to say this is a bit of a sneak peak at the sound for a new album headed our way?

We’re in pre production working on demos for our next batch of songs. They’re pretty eclectic in terms of sound and vibe but “SITW” is a good representation of where we’re heading musically. We’ll be working with producers Scotch Ralston (311) and Tyler Levander (No Fly List, Jellyroll).

You’ll be dropped a music video for the song on September 12 — can you talk about the importance of videos for bands in the social media age?

Constant content is the name of the game so music videos are as important as ever. Teasers, snippets and promo across all platforms is crucial to get the song heard and the video seen. Big ups to Kyle Edwards for directing.

In all your years of performing, can you tell us one of the wildest live experiences the band has had?

Recently our management team had us invited to play the VIP soft opening for Nashville’s newest rooftop rock venue; Fogg Street Live. The stage and sound were incredible with epic views of the Nashville skyline behind plus the crowd of industry execs was a nice bonus. They had Martina McBride’s former tour bus there for us to use as our green room. We’ve never felt more like rockstars in our lives.

What is it that you love about being in P-Funk North?

Everything. PFN is an entire vibe. We love what we do and it seems to be catching on. We’d be doing this regardless so we feel very fortunate to be feeling the love reciprocated. Also nothing beats playing a show and seeing the crowd forget about their problems if only briefly and rock out with us.

What are five things you’re excited for for P Funk North for the remainder of 2025 and early 2026?

New music, touring, festivals, collaborations and pumped to return to Ocean City Maryland for Oceans Calling weekend rocking September 26 and we’ll have an afterparty at Crawl Street Tavern following Green Day, Lenny Kravitz and more.
