Wow. What a trailer! See, Batman v Superman. That is how you do it. The final trailer is packed with action, interaction, and a ton of drama without giving away much of the plot. Let’s look at a couple of key moments that you may have missed and one you definitely didn’t from today’s new trailer for Captain America: Civil War.
1. Pictures of Spiderman
Let’s get this one out of the way. Die hard fans, casual viewers, and Daily Bugle editors alike will agree that the big takeaway from this trailer is the reveal of everyone’s favorite webhead. Spidey got a full four seconds of screentime with one line composed of two words on top of some unconvincing CG and it is already all over the bloggosphere. Ever since what was dubbed the “Spiderman Summit” in January of last year, Marvel has been patiently awaiting the introduction of Tom Holland’s Spiderman in Civil War.
This trailer definitely didn’t disappoint. Fans are split on the look of the costume. Some are not sold on the CGI. Others love the new look that harkens back to the classic costume specifically the John Romita look from the early Amazing Spider man run. The eyes also irked some fans. The way they focus, while clearly reminiscent of the costume on the Animated Series of the 90’s seems to be heavily influenced by some sort of technology. It is rumored that Tony Stark will be responsible for creating the Spidersuit, which honestly makes a lot more sense than the previous movie’s explanation of “He draws it a couple times and then wills it into existance.”
2. “I was wrong about you. The whole world was wrong about you.”
This trailer is all about setting up a divide between Tony “Iron Man” Stark and Steve “Captain America” Rogers but some of the lines seem to be purposefully misleading. For instance Tony delivers a line that the trailer would want you to believe is aimed at Steve about “the whole world being wrong about” Rogers, but I think there more to it than meets the eye.
We’ve known for a while that Daniel Brule will be playing the role of iconic purple sock-masked Baron Zemo and besides Frank Grillo’s Crossbones, is the only true villain in the film. It seems likely that Zemo will be some sort of diplomat and should be heavily involved in pulling the string that bring the heroes to blows. Considering Iron Man’s alligenment with the political power, it seems likely that Zemo’s chief deception is of Tony and I have a feeling that line is pointing not towards Steve but Zemo. Speaking of Zemo…
3. “Watch” Out for the Winter Soldier
During the big game trailer, we got a peek at what looks to be a pivotal confrontation between Bucky and Tony. In the scene, Tony activates a watch that he is able to turn into an Iron Man glove. He then uses that glove to muzzle a pistol held by Bucky. Bucky pulls the trigger. Tony is visibly shaken. The clip has a ton of weight but there is something people seem to be missing.
If you watch the shot in slow motion, it is clear that Tony is pulling the gun towards himself and potentially away from someone else. The original interpertation of the scene implies that Bucky is attempting to execute Tony, but what if the reality is that Tony is preventing the execution of another key player in the film? What if Zemo has aligned himself with Tony and Bucky is attempting to kill someone he recognizes as a deep cover Hydra operative, but the plan is foiled by Tony? That would give Tony plenty of motivation to bring Bucky to justice while keeping Bucky’s motivations relatively heroic.
4. Bucky v Rhodey: Dawn of Sidekicks
Speaking of misleading shots from the trailer, at one point near the middle War Machine is shot down by someone that you are clearly directed to believe is Bucky. According to this trailer, Bucky is trying to lay waste to the armored warriors and based on the shot that follows of Tony cradling a potentially dead Rhodey in his arms, further escalating the conflict between the two sides. The problem with that shot is, it is highly unlikely that Bucky pulled that trigger.
Since Tony is holding Bucky in the airfield, you would have to assume that Bucky shot War Machine down during the team v team fight, except that Bucky does not have his signature rifle in the shot where everyone is running towards eachother X Men Animated Show Opening style. Also, the shot that buzzes Rhodey seems to be some sort of energy beam and unless Bucky got a serious upgrade to his hardware, that doesn’t seem to fit. Then the question remains, who did take the shot. Since the beam isn’t red, it probably wasn’t Scarlett Witch. Vision is on Team Iron Man, but maybe he switches sides. It could also be some sort of weapon held by Crossbones, who is only briefly shown in this trailer.
5. A “Giant” Omission
Last thing. It is easy to forget but this trailer also introduced Ant Man to the Civil War roster in a pretty small way. We finally got the awesome shot of Ant Man riding one of Hawkeye’s arrows, which is a move directly out of every comic book the two have been in together. We didn’t get any lines from Scott Lang, although the tone of the trailer was clearly leaning away from comedic, which is most of what Rudd brings to the table. Ant Man also has a new outfit that looks more modern than his previous costume and should support some new powers.
In the comics, not only can Ant Man shrink but he has the power to grow and become…wait for it…GiAnt Man. I know. Fans assumed Lang would go goliath at some point in the franchise and countless toy tie ins have validated that assumption in Civil War. According to a Lego set, Lang grows during the airport fight between the teams, which would make sense considering how Team Cap is severely outgunned against an upgraded Iron Man, a pre KO’d War Machine, the seemingly bulletproof Black Panther, and the supremely overpowered Vision. Giant Man would be an effective way to even the odds. This all could just be Lego having some fun with the fans considering Iron Man 3’s Lego sets featured Aldrich Killian on a speedboat and the Mandarin riding some sort of souped up lawnmower.
Let us know what you thought of the trailer and what you think we may have missed in the comment section. Captain America: Civil War will release in the US on May 6th 2016.

He was maneuvering the gun so he could get his armored hand over the muzzle. It was not pointed at anyone else.
I think if you look specifically at 1:12, Bucky’s head is looking at someone to Tony’s left. If Bucky’s end goal is to shoot Tony, why isn’t he looking at Tony the whole time?
To me, it looks like he’s just looking at Tony in relation to the fight. His head is facing left because his body is moving with the fight and the arm movements. And, Winter Soldier is too cool for eye contact during fights.
