joe zorzi is like Asher Roth … he loves college …
I’ve always been pretty open minded when it comes to music. But coming to college and meeting so many different people with such a wide variety of tastes opened me up to so much new music. This mixtape is a compilation of songs from artists who’ve been buzzing a lot throughout my friend circles. Try to give each a chance, as they’re all pretty damn eclectic list.
The Dangerous Summer — “War Paint”
A few months before I started my collegiate career, I picked up Reach For The Sun by The Dangerous Summer. It helped me through a lot of hard times and ended up being the soundtrack to my summer (could’ve made a horrible pun right there). These guys just released their second full length this July and the internet communities have been buzzing … hard. The Dangerous Summer has slowly but surely been blowing up and this release has the potential to boost them to the next level. “War Paint” is the first single from the album, and it’s a great example of how pop punk can still be original.
Game ft. Tyler, The Creator & Lil Wayne — “Martians vs. Goblins”

My relationship with rap music started in the sixth grade. I wore the baggy clothes and jammed out to gangsta rap because … well, because everybody else was doing it. I got out of that phase quickly and jumped right into the local alt rock scene for the majority of my pre-collegiate life. At Rutgers University, I was once again completely surrounded by rap and hip-hop. I slowly learned to appreciate and love the genre.
I always thought Game was a really strong rapper and he proved it once again on his newest release, The R.E.D. Album. “Martians vs. Goblins” featuring Tyler, The Creator and Lil Wayne has come on top as a fan favorite. With Tyler winning Best New Artist at the VMAs, The R.E.D. Album coming in at No.1 1 on the Billboard charts, and Wayne dropping Tha Carter IV this past week, it’s not hard to see where the hypes coming from. Game channels Tyler’s slightly psychotic lyrical style for his own verses and both artists straight up kill it. And the beat’s cool as hell.
Daytrader — “Kill My Compass”
Okay, so you probably won’t be hearing Daytrader blasting through dormitory hallways anytime soon. But you should be. I stumbled upon “Kill My Compass” about a week ago and all I could say was “Holy nostalgia!”. The chorus literally gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. I can’t remember the last time heard a song that captures that early 2000’s emo sound so perfectly since the early 2000s. But, maybe I’m hyping this track up a little too much. Regardless, if you’re missing music like Sunny Day Real Estate and old-school Brand New, then you’ll love this too.
Katy Perry –- E.T. (Skrillex Remix)
Dubstep. You can’t be in college without listening to dubstep. It’s just what’s “in” these days. Skrillex is a personal favorite of mine. He’s good at keeping it catchy and his remixes are great. Putting his remix of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” on this mixtape was a no=brainer. It just won her and Mr. Kanye West a VMA for best collaboration. Not to mention, I’m kind of in love with her.
Oasis — “Wonderwall”
I know what you’re thinking. And you’re right. This isn’t a new, hip college kid song. But no matter what, this will always be the staple cover song for every below average guitarist sitting in the courtyard trying to pick up girls. Hell, I did it (I’m actually good, though, so it’s not a big deal).
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song covered more than “Wonderwall.” But as much as everyone loves to hate on this song, I kind of enjoy the corny sing-a-longs that come with it.
Frank Ocean — “Thinking About You”

Frank Ocean is the shit right now. Odd Future’s staple R&B singer has been blowing up ever since he released his album, Nostalgia, Ultra for free this past February. “Novacane” has been all over the radio and he was given two guest spots on Kanye and Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne album. Tyler, The Creator has been carrying the Odd Future gang to stardom, but Frank has been making waves in his own right. “Thinking About You” is one of his newer tracks. If you’re trying to impress the babes, throw it on.
