logan j. fowler and bill bodkin look at George Clooney’s new political thriller …
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent.
Seems Ryan Gosling has been busy lately, as this flick is being released pretty close to his role in Drive. In this drama/political thriller, Gosling plays a clean-cut staffer in a presidential campaign for Mike Morris (played by George Clooney, who also directed), and during the course of the film gets caught in a political scandal that may hamper the candidate’s chance to get his place in the White House. The trailer was full of intrigue, and like Gosling’s recent flick Drive, The Ides Of March features a stellar cast including not only Clooney, but also Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, and Jeffrey Wright. While I don’t think this is theater fare for me, I won’t “beware” The Ides Of March, as I definitely will check it out come rental time.

George Clooney might be one of the world’s most famous actors — but he’s also probably one of the most underrated directors out there. Go rent Good Night And Good Luck, and you will see that our generation’s king of cool can not only do drama, but he can do it at a masterful level. That’s why the Ides Of March intrigues me. I really want to see what Clooney can do with a bigger dramatic piece. Good Night was a passion project, an indie film with a big-time cast. Ides is much more glamorous and boasts a cast (including Ryan Gosling, who might just be the new Clooney) that has Oscar bait written all over it. Outside of Clooney’s presence, the trailer has me captivated. Is this a morality play? A political thriller? A taught drama? A satire of the election trail? Or all of the above? I can’t wait to find out.

Ryan Gosling’s just taking over these days huh?
yeah man, he’s the new hotness these days.
I’m with Bodkin on this one (and not just because I’m his permanent movie date). Gosling is one of the best actors in a long time and yes, he just might be the next Clooney.
