Pre-Trailer Thoughts: The LEGO Movie (released in 2014) was a surprise. It featured a creative twist and a wonderful cast of characters, both familiar and new, that made the movie a lot better than what it could’ve been. A sequel was without question, of course, but was it truly necessary? Phil Lord and Christopher Miller pumped a lot of magic into the first one, and while they are returning as screenplay writers on the follow up (they both directed and wrote the original), I wonder if that will be enough to keep this sequel afloat. –LJF
Pre-Trailer Thoughts: I was fairly hyped about the idea of a sequel to The LEGO Movie. It’s a movie I’ve seen countless times, and I absolutely love it. It’s funny, clever, and has a good heart. I know sequels sometimes are just studio cash-ins, but I felt this is the type of series you can easily continue. -BB
Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. The zany nature of the first one looks like it’s still in full force here, and it’s nice to see these characters back again. The setting is clearly playing on a “Mad Max” vibe, which is cool. Plus, Beastie Boys? A+. However, the trailer is not as funny as I’d hoped, except the “blinker” gag did get a laugh out of me. Overall, it’s not bad, but I was hoping for something more. –LJF
Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. The trailer just okay. I get what they’re going for here, but I honestly felt it was a flat, uninspired trailer. Yes, I like the band is back together, and there looks to be some promise here — but I felt completely ‘meh’ after watching this. -BB
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Theater. I loved the first Lego Movie, but I can’t say for certain that this sequel will capitalize on the success of the original. Still, it’ll be worth checking out, as I’ve definitely missed this crew and am curious to see where their next adventure brings them. Hopefully the next trailer will be better. –LJF
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent. Based solely on this teaser trailer, I’ll opt to rent this movie. Maybe my daughter, who’ll be 4 years old by February, will want to see this film. Otherwise, based on this teaser, I’ll wait at home for this one. -BB
