“The Hitcher’s Reveal”
This scene takes place at the beginning of the film and occurs when main character, Jim (C. Thomas Howell) picks up hitchhiker, John (Rutger Hauer). John seems unassuming at first, playing evasive but not suspicious. When Jim attempts to stop and help out a car on the side of the road, the hitchhiker puts his foot on the gas and explains, calmly, that he killed the driver and plans to do the same to John. The truly terrifying part is how matter-of-factly Hauer plays this, calmly stating that he will kill Jim, frightening us all.
