100 Scariest Horror Movie Moments: Part 4

32. An American Werewolf in London – 1981

The Transformation

As I mentioned a few weeks back, many believe that the film The Howling ripped off An American Werewolf in London but in reality, the former was released first. But older is not always better as London boasts the absolute best transformation scene of all time. Rick Baker’s effects, so visceral, so realistic, make every bone in your body ache as we watch this young man stretch, break and turn from human to werewolf. Over thirty years later this is still a highlight of practical effects and makes even the strongest of men a little queasy.

31. The Conjuring – 2013

Hide and Clap

Damn you movie trailers! Why must you ruin a truly terrifying scene with your poor marketing? Sigh. Needless to say, if you didn’t have your viewing experience ruined by inexperienced marketing “geniuses”, you were probably taking a quick bathroom break following this scene. The kids of the house have a game called “Hide and Clap”; sort of like Marco Polo without water. When the mother (played by Lily Taylor) thinks her kids are playing past their bedtime, she investigates into the basement, which is always a smart choice. The lights don’t work, so she lights a match (strong idea #2) and follows the claps. She hears a little kids’ voice and a set of hands appear behind her, clapping and extinguishing her match and my hopes of ever sleeping again.
