On Sunday, as the 2014 Comic Con was coming to a close audiences were treated to the spectacle that was the Gotham Panel. This packed event was one of the biggest highlights of the entire weekend. The panel included Executive Producer/Series Director Danny Cannon, Ben McKenzie, Donal Louge, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, and Sean Pertwee.
Gotham is running amok when we first saw the pilot last month, with corruption gripping the city in a stranglehold not a lot of good was getting done, until Jim Gordon joined the Gotham County Police Department. In the first few weeks we’ve seen a lot from the new hit series and fans have been waiting to see what else is in store this first season. Thanks to the cast and crew we were given some more insight on what to expect down the line.
The Panel kicked off with a clip that was featured in Monday’s episode between Taylor’s soon to be Penguin and Jim Gordon. The clip has Cobblepot telling Gordon that he may very well be the last good man in Gotham and that war is coming, he promises that many deaths are on the horizon. Taylor took the time after the clip to go into Cobblepot’s current rise to villainy “He works his way into situations and is able to play people off one another and emerge triumphantly between them,” he said. The Penguin talk directly led into Fish Mooney, putting her survival into question, it was asked whether the rising villain-to-be would be the downfall and eventual demise of Jada Pinkett-Smith’s character. “That is something that we explore very much, and there will be casualties and collateral damage.” Danny Cannon teased.
Besides the characters we have seen the first few episodes, Cannon revealed more villains are on the way such as Victor Zsasz in episode 7. Zsazs, an insane man who views murder as liberating people from their bodies. It should be noted that Zsasz is a frequent houseguest of Arkham Asylum as well so look forward to that too. Harvey Dent will also appear in Episode 9. Dent, who has been represented in multiple Batman films by Tommy Lee Jones and more recently Aaron Eckhart, will eventually become Gotham’s District Attorney. This is until he suffers a near fatal acid attack that leaves him split on serving justice. Danny Cannon also promised a ton of more villains once the show is in its second season.
Besides the villains on the show, fans have been expressing a big interest in the young Bruce Wayne character on the show, wondering if we will see more screen time of the future Dark Knight. The cast made it clear that writers are concentrating more on how Alfred (Sean Pertwee) and Jim Gordon will guide Young Bruce. With the current pace of the show, plans of focusing on Bruce’s story are still seasons away. For now they have this different spin on Alfred Pennyworth, so they wish to show how he plans to try his best in bringing up the young troubled prince of Gotham.
