3. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
If there was ever a movie that epitomized the phrase “victim of your own success” more, it would be The Dark Knight Rises. I’ve probably lost two years of my life arguing about the greatness of this movie. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and if you don’t like the film, more power to you. But there’s no denying this movie was unfairly criticized and ripped apart by many because of pure expectations. Aside from The Phantom Menace, it was the most hyped film ever made. It also became the most nit-picked movie ever made. “How did Bruce Wayne get back to Gotham” belongs in the nit-pick hall of a fame.
If there’s one thing I want people to take away from this article, it’s to watch this movie again without the hype. Forget how much you emotionally invested in this film, and just watch it as a film. You’ll find it’s something pretty damn incredible. There are so many gut-wrenching moments, I can’t even keep track. It certainly has its flaws, but the high points are so damn good. The last shot of this film is the perfect way to end a trilogy. It’s some of the best work Nolan has ever done.
