2. Audition Tapes
This segment wasn’t the most hilarious of the night, but it was definitely the most fascinating. In an exceptionally rare move, Lorne Michaels unearthed the SNL audition tapes of the many people who tried out over the years. There was Andy Samberg, Amy Poehler, John Belushi, Radner, Hader, and many others. It was a great way to look back at when all of these major stars were hoping to make their big break. Ferrell apparently did his impersonation of Harry Caray too, which ended up becoming one of his classic characters. Imagine that!
There were even the tapes of the people who didn’t get on, only to become huge later. These were little known stars like Stephen Colbert, Zack Galifianakis, Jim Carrey, Kevin Hart, and Andy Kaufman. Clearly, the fact that they weren’t able to make it on comedy’s biggest show had no detrimental effect on their careers. If anything, this is a prime example that this program isn’t an infallible barometer of talent. Sure, plenty of people were turned away because they were just terrible, but others likely couldn’t fit into the show’s difficult process. True talent can never be buried though. I’m sure people like Colbert or Carrey were devastated when they couldn’t get on, but clearly everything worked out for them in the end.
