100 Scariest Horror Movie Moments: Part 5

2. Halloween – 1978

The Darkness

Halloween is my absolute favorite horror movie of all time, scaring the pants off of me for nearly twenty years. I first saw this on Halloween night in 1998 and have kept that tradition going until this day. To this day it scares me, with John Carpenter’s excellent direction, score and use of darkness and shadow to hide his Shape. The scene that still makes my heart pound is when Laurie sees her friend’s dead and takes a breather in the hallway. All of a sudden, Michael Myers’ face appears out of complete darkness, a brilliant effect by Carpenter. It’s incredibly subtle and that’s what makes it so special. Just thinking about it is giving me chills. Don’t let this fool you, however. This entire film is terrifying.
