1. Psycho – 1960
The Smile
Do I need to say more? Oh, I do? Okay, here’s my reasoning. While a lot of these moments may be scarier right off the bat, Psycho’s ending sticks with you long after you’ve left the theater (or at this point, turned off the Blu-Ray). We think Norman Bates is just sick in the head, dressing up as his mother and killing people because of a messed up childhood. And this may be true but at the end, when Norman smiles, we are led to believe otherwise. Maybe Norman does know what he’s doing. Maybe he’s just crazy and enjoys killing people dressed up as a woman. That smile tells a whole different story, one we get to see in the criminally underrated Psycho II.
