The Hallway from Hell
Hostel is actually quite brilliant, even if people do bastardize it for jump-starting the whole “torture porn” genre. The genius behind it is the way we can connect with the American protagonists of the film, surveying an unfamiliar territory and our xenophobia of other cultures. Though all of this is scary, the most traumatizing scene comes as Paxton is making his way through the compound and comes across is friend, Josh, dead on a table with his guts spilling out. He is soon dragged away by some guards but not before he witnesses other horrors, such as a person getting a hammer to the face.
