4. The Martian – Megan LaBruna

Out of the surplus of great movies released this year, The Martian earned a spot on my favorites list.  While I am an avid fan of both Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, the story is what really gained my attention.   The ingenuity of the character was mind blowing.  It was truly the ultimate survival situation which allowed for audiences to feel both the horror Mark Watney’s crew and Nasa must have felt once they realized he was alive, but it also put viewers in the shoes of Mark himself.  How would you react if you woke up after a storm to realize you are completely alone on a foreign planet with only 30 days worth of supplies and no way to communicate with earth?  Ridley Scott’s display of the human spirit to strive to survive against all odds was truly captivating.

F or a serious movie, it even managed to have some lighthearted moments which would definitely be required of someone stuck by themselves in space for years at a time.  Each character was well developed; I enjoyed seeing Kristen Wiig in a serious role working alongside Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ejiofor.  Their characters helped to present the business side of what happens when original plans go awry in a multibillion dollar venture.  Hearing the politics involved in whether or not the crew members could return to save their fellow astronaut and what it might cost regarding their careers was eye opening.   All in all, The Martian managed to keep me enthralled and constantly had me on the edge of my seat despite being a rather long movie, which is why it has earned a spot in my top picks of 2015.
