Aaron and Josh Sarnecky return in a new year to talk about Cloverfield, celebrating its 15th anniversary.
Cloverfield is a found footage monster movie directed by Matt Reeves and written by Drew Goddard. It opened in theaters on January 18, 2008.
The film follows Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David), along with his friends and family (Odette Yustman, T.J. Miller, Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, and Mike Vogel). During Rob’s farewell party, a giant monster starts destroying Manhattan. The incident is shown via camcorder footage.
Cloverfield garnered a mostly positive reception. Renowned French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma named it the third best film of 2008. The movie grossed $172 million on a $25 million budget.
Josh and Aaron discuss the plot, camerawork, and monster. They also chat about the found footage genre’s potential.
