Merry bloody Christmas.
The trailer for Ridley Scott’s hotly anticipated horror/sci-fi epic, Alien Covenant was under everyone’s Christmas tree this morning.
The film is a sequel to Scott’s Alien prequel, Prometheus, which was released in 2012. The film made solid money at the box office, but left audiences strongly divided. Many deriding the film for its runtime and connection to the Alien franchise, while others praised the film for its performances, taught storytelling, and the aforementioned connection to the Alien franchise.
Alien: Covenant finds another space crew entangled with aliens. This time it’s the crew of the ship Covenant, which lands on an uncharted planet whose only inhabitant is David, the android from Prometheus, played by Michael Fassbender.
While the premise is a predictable Alien premise (crew unwittingly ends up battling the aliens), the cut of this trailer is claustrophobic, visceral, and downright frightening.
In the trailer we see a number of the film’s stars including: Fassbender, Billy Crudup (Almost Famous, Big Fish), Danny McBride (we’re not joking), and Katherine Waterston (daughter of Law & Order’s Sam Waterson, and star of Fantastic Beasts). The cast also includes (and not seen in the trailer) Oscar nominee Demian Bichir (FX’s The Bridge), Empire’s Jussie Smollet, James Franco, and Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, and Guy Pearce.
The film is directed by Ridley Scott, and written John Logan — the Oscar nominated screenwriter of Hugo, Gladiator, The Aviator, and Skyfall.
The fil;m is scheduled for release on May 19. 2017.
