Marisa and Matt continue their annual breakdowns of every category at the Oscars one nominee at a time. This double episode focuses on the two writing categories — Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The nominees for Best Original Screenplay are: Judas and The Black Messiah (Screenplay by Will Berson & Shaka King; Story by Will Berson & Shaka King and Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas); Minari (Written by Lee Isaac Chung), Promising Young Woman (Written by Emerald Fennell), Sound of Metal (Screenplay by Darius Marder & Abraham Marder; Story by Darius Marder & Derek Cianfrance) and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Written by Aaron Sorkin).

The nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay are: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Screenplay by Sacha Baron Cohen & Anthony Hines & Dan Swimer & Peter Baynham & Erica Rivinoja & Dan Mazer & Jena Friedman & Lee Kern; Story by Sacha Baron Cohen & Anthony Hines & Dan Swimer & Nina Pedrad), The Father (Screenplay by Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller), Nomadland (Written for the screen by Chloé Zhao), One Night in Miami (Screenplay by Kemp Powers), White Tiger (Written for the screen by Ramin Bahrani).

Best Make, Hairstyling and Costume Design: This episode focuses on one two of the technical categories, Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Achievement in Costume Design. The nominees for Makeup and Hairstyling are Emma.Hillbilly ElegyMa Rainey’s Black BottomMank and Pinocchio. For Best Costume Design, the nominees are Alexandra Byrne for Emma., Ann Roth for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Trish Summerville for Mank, Bina Daigeler for Mulan and Massimo Cantini Parrini for Pinocchio. In the episode, Matt and Marisa reveal that they both watched Pinocchio despite promising to skip it, praise the makeup in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and finally address the Hillbilly Elegy of it all.

Best Original Song & Score: Marisa and Matt continue their annual breakdowns of every category at the Oscars one nominee at a time. This episode focuses on one of Marisa’s perennial favorite categories (Original Score) and one of Matt’s least favorites (Original Song). For Best Original Score, the nominees are Terence Blanchard for Da 5 Bloods, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross  and Jon Batiste for Soul, Emile Rosseri for Minari, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Mank and James Newton Howard for News of the World.

For Best Original Song, the nominees are “Husavik” from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah, “Speak Now” from One Night in Miami…, “Io Si (Seen)” from The Life Ahead and “Hear My Voice” from The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Best Animated Feature Breakdown: The Animated Feature nominees are OnwardOver the MoonA Shaun the Sheep Movie: FarmageddonSoul and Wolfwalkers. During the episode, Marisa confesses her undying love for all things Shaun the Sheep, Matt admits he doesn’t know any children and they both wonder whether Pixar is trying too hard to make audiences cry.

Despite the rough moments, the show wasn’t all bad and Matt and Marisa talk about the excellent tributes to Norman Mailer and Jane Fonda as well as some of the night’s funniest and most powerful speeches. Finally, they break down the winners in the major film categories and discuss how the Golden Globes influence the Oscar race.
