73. Cat People – 1942
The Stalk Walk
Cat People succeeds to this day because of its use of sound and abstract camera angles, creating a creepy atmosphere. This is never more apparent than when our main character, Irena, is walking alone at night. As she walks, the audience, who is aware a panther escaped from the zoo, expects her to turn around and see the bloodthirsty feline. The eerie silence is shattered by a loud, panther like hiss – that turns out to be a bus pulling up to her location. This is one of the first instances of a jump scare, or “Lewton Bus”, and is without a doubt the most effective form of it.
