BEST ACTOR

Michael Keaton (Birdman)

While not as crazy as 2013, this was another extraordinary year for Best Actor. The reason I have to give it to Keaton though is really quite simple – there’s nobody else that could have played this role. It had to be Michael Keaton. When we look at superhero movies today, typecasting isn’t nearly as prevalent as it once was. Almost all of today’s superhero stars are able to do other projects and separate themselves. Unless you were already an established star like Jack Nicholson, playing an iconic role out of the gate was a death blow. While Keaton had done other projects before Batman (1989), this was the role that both launched and killed his career. In 2009, this guy was playing a supporting role in Post Grad with Alexis Bledel. You can say it’s art imitating life, but whatever it was, Keaton was given a chance to unload, as well as showcase the great actor he could have been. Despite all my honorable mentions, Keaton’s staggering performance has to be the winner. Edward Norton’s character in Birdman talks about “baring his soul,” and that’s exactly what Michael Keaton does.
