Best and Worst in Film 2014

SCENE OF THE YEAR

The End of Whiplash (Whiplash)

whiplash
I won’t dare say anything too specific here because I don’t want to spoil Whiplash for anyone, but the scene speaks for itself. This is an incredible way to end a movie, and solidifies why you need to think about Fletcher’s (Simmons) methods to some degree.

While I’m giving Whiplash the win here, I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least talk about the fight at the end of The Raid 2, which is an honorable mention. While Whiplash got it because of the emotional impact, this fight is the most impressive sequence I’ve seen all year. I wish I cared for the overall film more, but I can’t even imagine the training and months that went into creating that fight scene. If you’ve seen the film then you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Mark Schultz eats himself into oblivion (Foxcatcher)
  • Rama Vs. The Assassin (The Raid 2)
  • Drum Roulette (Whiplash)
  • Quicksilver (X-Men: Days of Future Past)
