THE “PLEASE GO AWAY” AWARD
The Spider-Man Franchise
I’m done with this character. As someone who hated the Sam Raimi trilogy, the rebooted first Amazing Spider-Man was a breath of fresh. What became of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 though is a prime example of all the things that can go wrong when making a big budgeted Hollywood film. Desperate to cash in on the Avengers success, the sweat of desperation from Sony executives to turn Spider-Man into its own shared universe was pathetic. Even though the box office performed fine, there’s no question it lost a ton of goodwill. I feel bad picking on Sony right now, but that movie deserved to underperform.
I also feel bad for Spider-Man fans. I know how you feel. Batman fans had to suffer through the Joel Schumacher years, and all the aftermath that entailed. I guess the difference is many Spider-Man fans felt their Batman & Robin was Spider-Man 3, but it turns out that was still yet to come. I wish Spider-Man fans well, but speaking for me personally, I’d be perfectly happy never to see this character again.
Honorable Mentions:
- Half assed attempts at young adult novel adaptations (The Giver, and probably others I can’t think of right now)
- Movies based on Hercules (The Legend of Hercules, Hercules)
- Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark in every single damn movie he does (Chef, The Judge)
