70. Friday the 13th – 1980
The Canoe
This one had to come eventually. The Friday the 13th franchise is known as one of the forefathers of the slasher genre, giving us gratuitous nudity, violence and the stupidest teenagers to ever exist, and they are glorious. Sure, these films were never truly scary, usually making you laugh and root for Jason (especially in the later installments) but the first film was actually scary, in its own right. When Alice, our final girl, chops off Mrs. Voorhees’ head and hits the lake with a canoe, patiently waiting for the cops, we think she is safe. Out of nowhere, a young and deformed Jason Voorhees manifests from the lake, pulling her to the lake’s murky bottom. It’s a jolt and while it is just a dream of Alice’s, it doesn’t stop it from being scary.
