7. A Rogue’s Tale (Season 2)
Some of the better X-Men episodes are when they focus on one single character arc. “A Rogue’s Tale” certainly falls under that umbrella. Rogue hasn’t been explored to her full potential in the films, with the exception of maybe the first X-Men movie. Out of all the characters, she may be the most heart breaking. She can’t touch another human being. Seriously, that’s some powerful shit. This episode demonstrates just how dangerous her powers can be. We get the full brunt of her sad back story, which includes putting her boyfriend in the hospital, and being thrown out by her parents. She’s adopted by Mystique, who completely manipulates her. As a weapon, Rogue ends up touching Ms. Marvel so long that she permanently steals her powers, and even puts Ms. Marvel in an indefinite coma. While Professor X was able to suppress Ms. Marvel in her mind, everything starts bubbling to the surface. This creates a ridiculously layered story where Rogue battles Ms Marvel in her mind, and even in the physical form after she adopts Mystique’s powers. It leads to a crazy battle within Rogue’s mind where Jean Grey attempts to play referee. It’s insane. It’s an emotional game of death between Rogue, Ms. Marvel and Mystique, but ends on a poignant note with Rogue visiting Ms. Marvel in the hospital. It’s a whirlwind of an episode, and the ultimate story that perfectly captures who Rogue is.
