50. The Phantom of the Opera – 1925
The Trick
Lon Cheney’s phantom face maybe enough to land on this list but that’s not what we’ll be discussing today. Before it was made into a Broadway play, The Phantom of the Opera was a tragic novel made into a tragic (and scary) movie. The end of the film sees the Phantom being pursued by townspeople, ready to kill him. When he runs out of places to run, he stops and begins to perform, as if to show his audience a trick. Instead, he stretches out his hands, as if to say, “Aha! I’ve got you!” The mob immediately, well, mobs him and this is the scariest part, as they are willing to kill a man who has done nothing wrong.
