Linda Belcher (voiced by John Roberts) is by far the most honest representation of motherhood on an animated sitcom. A woman who is relentlessly optimistic despite never having a honeymoon or a day off in a decade, she is the biggest supporter of her family. Her husband Bob regularly gets into situations of escalating absurdity, and she sticks with him no matter what. Her children constantly hatch their own goofy schemes, and she mostly encourages them because they are her world. She has absolutely no problem with putting their needs before hers. Notably, it’s very rare that her family throws her into circumstances that directly harm her. In her mind, no idea is a “bad idea.” Despite the financial issues, a very common and realistic problem, she lives a great life.

She’s not fully defined by her motherhood however. It’s the biggest part of her normal life, of course, but her massive appeal comes from her own individual experiences. She knows when to have fun and when to get serious. It’s not uncommon to find her drinking booze simply because she enjoys doing it. Most of the time she faces inconveniences on her own volition that aren’t the after effects of her husband doing something idiotic, an animated sitcom staple. The most recent episode had Linda inadvertently going on a long adventure on her birthday. Her family went searching for her after getting concerned, but it proved unnecessary because the Belcher matriarch returned home by herself. She’s independent and strong, and is the exact type of parent/wife/sister that you’d want on your side. Or as Linda herself would say, she’s “Alriiiiight!”  –Luke Kalamar, TV Editor
